Self Defense Insurance?

If you have followed any of our YouTube, Facebook, or website post you'll know that I've been a firearms instructor since 2007 and started making holsters due to the fact that I couldn't find one that suited me perfectly, so I designed my own and it just grew from there. Being around firearms all my life and working asset protection most of my life, and then instructing thousands of students through the concealed weapons permit classes, I've personally seen lots of crime and had several of my students get into self-defense incidents after they received their permits and were carrying firearms when they had to defend themselves or others.

This brings us to the question is self-defense insurance needed or suggested by a professional firearms instructor or someone who has dealt in the security realm most of their lives? Well, let's dive into some situations I've found myself in and that a couple of my students have found themselves in.

First let's dive into a few situations I've found myself in through work. I had 3 incidents that led to me being charged with using too much force. To enlighten the reader if you didn't already know, criminals don't like being caught and will fight to no end sometimes to avoid going to jail which is what I had in those 3 incidents. Two of them we had 100% of the incident on camera and the case ended up being thrown out in the pre-trials which was good for us, and the lawyer bill was only a few thousand dollars on the companies end. It still cost a few thousand dollars, and this is using the lawyer the company keep on retainer. The third we weren't so lucky, the only thing on camera was the subject being detained feet going up in the air and then going down while he was being body slammed. When this subject was approached during his purse snatching, he decided to start fighting me. He started punching and elbowing me in the head. Had I allowed this to continue I wouldn't have lasted long so I had to defend myself, so I picked him up and slammed him to the ground. I was able to handcuff him at this point and the incident was over without anyone really getting hurt. Sure, we were both bruised up and sore the next day, but neither of us had to go to the hospital or anything. The police arrived and took custody and that was that, or so I thought. The day or so I was served with a warrant for using too much force. I showed up to pre-trial and it went full trial. The pre-trial was several thousand dollars and then the full trail ended up being around fifty thousand dollars for a trail that lasted over a couple of days. Fortunately, with this guy's criminal history and a few assaults on police officers I was found not guilty and was able to go back to my job. However, it still cost the company 50+ thousand dollars once it was said and done.

Now, I know that the security realm of things is a lot different than that of the civilian world. The first student I had was at a gas station early one morning and walked out of the bathroom into an armed robbery. He was able to draw his weapon and get the robber to the ground without a shot fired. The police came and put him and the robber in the back of police cars. Once everything was sorted out by viewing the video footage, my student was released with a subpoena for a court date and was told that if he got a good lawyer, he would be fine. Well, after about 60 thousand dollars of lawyer fees put on his credit card, they were right, he was found in defense of others and was good to go. Fortunately, he had credit cards that he could us to pay the 60 thousand dollars. This was a cut and dry self-defense case, and it cost him a lot of money...

Now, the next student wasn't so lucky. He went to pick up his 18-month-old daughter at a place he had the right to be armed with his permit. He walked into the building and heard people screaming in a room down the hall. He ran to see what was happening and ran into two people literally pulling like tug of war on his daughter to the point it was hurting her and neither would let go. His daughter ended up with major bruising on her arms and legs from being pulled in opposite directions. The dad ended up pulling his gun when after several times trying to get them to let go. Once he pulled his gun they stopped and gave him his daughter. He went outside and called the police. The police ended up arresting him! He sat in jail a few days and then called me to get a decent lawyer as one of the investigator's told him to do. Unfortunately, he couldn't afford one. At the time the retainer fee was around 15 thousand for a self-defense felony case, It's much more now. He ended up taking the court appointed attorney, do not take the court appointed attorney. Most of them only want to close cases, so they told him to sign a plea to 5 years and he wouldn't get 20, so he did... He sent about 3 in prison and got out on parole for the remaining. It took him many years to get his life halfway back together.

So, do I suggest some kind of self-defense protection? Absolutely, in fact so much so at this point I wouldn't leave home without some sort of legal protection. There are many companies out there and I highly suggest Right to Bear. They offer the most protection at the best rates. They also won't drop you like other companies do if you get charged with a crime, they will still defend you as long as you reasonably believe you acted in self-defense. They cover all self-defense actions not just guns, but hand to hand all the way to guns. They also offer other legal services with your plan to help with those cost as well. Go check them out HERE and make sure to get covered ASAP! I can't stress the importance of having legal coverage to protect yourself in a court of law. If you defend yourself against an attack, you're going to need it!
